Moving is never easy. If you are moving across town or down the street, there are challenges, but it gets even more demanding and hectic when moving to another state. Fortunately, this checklist will help you get your ducks in a row, so you’re well-prepared to relocate to a new state.
Comprehensive Checklist for Moving to Another State
Checklists help you remember everything you have to do. When moving to another state, you don’t have the luxury of going back to your old house if you discover you’ve forgotten something after the move.
A checklist is essential since there’s no looking back once you leave your old home.
Set Aside a Budget
Moving across state lines can be an expensive affair. Before everything else, determine a sufficient budget to finance the move. While part of the budget will go towards the actual moving fees, include other expenses such as:
- Utility deposits and account set up fees
- Wi-Fi and cable
- Fuel costs and/or airfare for you and your family
- Miscellaneous costs for unforeseen circumstances
Choose a Moving Company
While moving across town might be something you can do on your own, moving to another state is vastly different. A full-service moving experience is best for long-haul moves as it saves you time and effort.
Choose a mover depending on your circumstances. For instance, are you moving far? Does the moving company have experience relocating customers via long-distance moves? Will the company pack and unpack your belongings for you? Most importantly, how will they package your belongings, and what will the total service cost? Find out if they have insurance and if they guarantee their work.
Notify People and Places of Your New Address
Update mailing and billing addresses and cancel any memberships, services, or utilities you won’t be using in the new state. Before moving, be sure to cancel your local gym membership and any future health and wellness appointments and services. Similarly, cancel your utilities, including trash removal and recycling, Wi-Fi, and cable, if your current company doesn’t extend these services in the new state.
Visit Before Moving to Another State
If possible, spend time in your new state ahead of your move. Familiarize yourself with the surrounding area and find where you can get essential and basic services. Similarly, because state laws differ in many areas, including taxes, learn about the state laws.
Additionally, find out what the weather’s like and the region’s topography. If you are moving to a different climate than what you are used to, you may need to update your wardrobe and household essentials for the new area.
Regardless of how well you plan, moving out of state is unpredictable. Being open-minded and adaptive will help you adjust with ease when facing unexpected obstacles.
